On Thursday 6th May, we held our inaugural senior invitation performance competition. This concert gives a performing platform to musicians in the top year as a leaving recital. We also use the event as an opportunity to award the Openshaw Cup.

Peter Openshaw, who left Ludgrove last year, was a keen clarinettist at Ludgrove and gave this fine cup to the school. We decided to set up a performance competition and we were delighted to be joined by Mr. and Mrs. Openshaw in chapel for the event. We also welcomed Mr. Alex Arkwright, Head of performance at Marlborough College, to adjudicate the competition for us.

Chapel proved to be an ideal venue for the concert and the eight boys involved performed extremely well in a very varied programme which ranged from Bach to Take That. Mr. Arkwright gave an immensely amusing adjudication which had everyone in fits of laughter. He also gave some excellent feedback and advice to the performers which they were all eager to take on board.

He was very impressed with the standard of each performer. He commended Julius Manton-Jones on a very moving performance of Rachmaninov’s Vocalise, and awarded the cup to Thomas Capaldi for his playing on the organ. Parents and boys then enjoyed talking to Mr. Arkwright after the concert in the drawing room.

The programme can be downloaded below and photos can be viewed here.
