The boys enjoyed a busy, but bitterly cold, weekend and there were a huge amount of fun activities on offer. Saturday afternoon saw several teams playing some excellent cricket in matches against Hall Grove and Woodcote House and the others were busy in all areas of the school – on the tennis court, in the swimming pool and in the nets. It was also an early opportunity for boys to impress Mr Buckner on the athletics track.

The rain poured down on Sunday morning, but having written their Sunday letters, the boys took the opportunity to enjoy some quick cricket in the sports hall and water polo in the swimming pool; the seniors were able to slot in a valuable revision session, too. Fortunately, the showers eased during the afternoon and several golfers braved the wind to take part in the staff and boys Texas Scramble Golf competition – Mr Saunders and his team look to be early favourites for the prize.

Mrs Honor had a keen team of potters down in the ceramics department and there was more swimming, tennis, indoor cricket and high jump for all. An enterprising group of Sixes made flags and charged around the camps playing ‘Catch the Flag’. In the middle of the afternoon, the boys got a huge surprise when ‘Mick the Ice’ turned up in his van to dish out ice creams to the boys on chapel ground – despite it not being ice cream weather, it provided a welcome break from activities and the Sunday film, Avatar.

Soon afterwards, our eleven new boys enjoyed a delicious tea with Mrs Barber in the conservatory. After tea we were lucky to have Reverend Rupert Demery, the Chaplain of the Lower Chapel at Eton, come to speak to the boys at Evensong.

Next week, before the exeat on Friday, the boys are looking forward to a talk on ‘The Jungles of Borneo’ by Mr Mathews, who is becoming a housemaster at Radley in September, and also cricket matches against Holme Grange and Lambrook, an athletics match against Sunningdale and Lambrook and a golf match with Daneshill.
