In addition to their one academic music lesson per week, over two-thirds of the boys have instrumental lessons and a considerable number learn more than one instrument.

There is a team of ten peripatetic teachers, who together with the full time members of the department offer lessons in everything from violin to bagpipes. (For more details please see the extras list). There are a number of school instruments which boys are welcome to use (subject to availability). However, we would always encourage boys who shows aptitude to buy their own instrument.

Boys receive one thirty-five minute lesson per week, these are arranged on a rotational basis and core academic subject lessons are not missed. The ethos within the department is to foster a love and enjoyment of music making. However, boys also take both Associated Board and Trinity Guildhall exams. Extremely talented boys are encouraged to apply for, and have gained, music awards at Public School.

There are formal and informal concerts every term and boys are encouraged to perform both individually and in groups.

The chapel choir, school choir, band, junior choir and string group meet on a weekly basis and there are other smaller groups that are formed throughout the year for specific performances.

Singing is very important at Ludgrove. The chapel choir sings an anthem every Sunday. Many of the drama productions have a musical element to them.
