Reporting to the Estates Manager, the Groundsman will be responsible for:

- The preparation and maintenance of all sports fields and pitches with particular emphasis on cricket pitches and the golf course

- Supporting the Estates Manager with the general maintenance of all the school grounds

Key responsibilities

You will be one of two groundsmen responsible for the management the school pitches and grounds and surrounding areas throughout the year.


Your primary tasks will be:

- Maintaining the general appearance of the school grounds

- Preparing first-class cricket pitches and wickets for forthcoming matches

- Preparing first-class football and rugby pitches

- Lead with the upkeep of the ground, outfield, head rows, pavilion and score box

- Lead in the pre- and post-season preparation of the square and ground

- Providing first-class golf greens


Your secondary tasks will be:

- Maintaining Ludgrove drive and other grounds throughout the year

- Assisting with the upkeep of the MUGA and hard surface tennis courts

- Undertaking general maintenance of the grounds machinery

- Assisting with the upkeep and maintenance of the wooded areas, including basic tree maintenance and the use of hedge cutters, strimmers, chain saws etc.

- Any other reasonable task assigned to you by either the Estates Manager or Headmaster


Key skills and experience:          

- Experience of grounds / pitch maintenance

- Ideally hold Institute of Groundsmanship qualification (IOG)

- Enjoy working in an outdoor environment

- Good communicator and team player

- Reliable and committed

- Experience of using groundsman’s equipment  

- Hold a PA1 / PA6 certificate for the safe use of pesticides

- Ideally hold a clean and current driving licence.

- Knowledge and understanding of H&S rules and requirements

- Extensive grounds management experience which ideally must include cricket, turf, winter sports pitches, as well as basic maintenance of Astro turf

- Ability to optimise the playing quality of the sports facilities. This will include schedules for seasonal grounds maintenance including fertilisers, chemical treatments and remedial techniques

- You will be able to plan, organise and prioritise effectively and cope under pressure and set high standards

- Ideally you should be qualified in sports turf maintenance, or turf science

- During “quiet” periods you will be expected to carry out other forms of maintenance, both outside and within the school buildings

- You should be willing to work occasionally out of hours and at weekends


Conditions of Employment

- All members of staff are expected to wear uniform clothing and safety shoes for the role, which will be provided for you.

- The school is a non-smoking site; there is a single designated smoking area

- The working day includes two breaks of 30 minutes to be taken at a time agreed with the Estates Manager

- All leave is to be agreed in advance with the Estates Manager


Salary:                                  Dependant on experience

Hours of work:                  8:30am – 4:00pm Mon- Fri

Holiday entitlement:      5 weeks per annum plus bank holidays*

                                                *except where a bank holiday falls on a day when the school is open.
